UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
MASTER CLASS SERIES
The Master Class series of workshops has been set up to bring world class instructors to Manitoba and Canada. The sessions are held in our studio here in Woodmore, MB. which is one hour south of Winnipeg. The sessions run from 10:30am to 5:30pm with a lunch break. For anyone not wanting to travel back and forth to the city, local bed and breakfasts are arranged for $30 per night. The workshop requires a 50% deposit to hold your spot.
Direct Painting the Portrait from a Live Model
This 3-day workshop will focus on a “head-and-shoulders” oil study painted from a live model using a direct painting method. We will use a single, long-term pose for the duration of the workshop which offers an opportunity for deep exploration of drawing and, importantly, of form painting. (i.e., three-dimensional illusionism). The long pose approach allows participants a deeper dive into proper, relational “seeing” which is what truly creates and develops visual understanding (perception). As the work progresses, Juan will discuss relevant aspects of structure, including anatomy and morphology (planes of the face and head) as well as the various rhythms of colour found in representational painting. Brushwork and colour mixing/choosing are fundamental aspects of the workshop, too.
Direct painting borrows from the layering methods used by most of the Old Masters and 19th c. academicians, as well as from the alla prima or bravura schools that feature a largely wet-into-wet paint application. Thus, direct painting is really a “total” approach: a synthesis of techniques which allows for efficiency of execution, yet does not compromise any principles of quality, craftsmanship, or draughtsmanship that fine painting possesses.

Plein Air Oil Painting
A THREE DAY WORKSHOP
PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE
Date: September 25, 26 and 27th, 2020
Price: $400 (plus GST)
In this 3-day intensive workshop with award-winning landscape painter Kadin Goldberg, students will learn how to simplify the infinitely complex landscape and create luminous, lifelike oil paintings on location. The main focus of this workshop will be understanding and capturing light and color.
Painting the landscape outside is incredibly challenging. Kadin will help his students to simplify the experience by breaking down plein air painting into a step-by-step process of smaller, manageable tasks. Each day will begin with a short lecture on a specific topic, followed by a live demonstration. Each consecutive exercise will build upon the previous one to help students become more comfortable painting the landscape outdoors. Ample time will be given to students to work on their own paintings and individual critique will be provided.
Among the many topics discussed will be: drawing, value, hue, chroma, design, edge control as well as paint application. By the end of this fun and informative course, you will have all the tools necessary to push your art to the next level!

Painting Basics - Harmony in Colour
A TWO DAY WORKSHOP
Date: May 2 and 3rd, 2020
Price: $180 (plus GST)
For a painting to be in harmony it is necessary that the tones sound in unison. Just as in music if an instrument is out of tune, it breaks the structure and the consonance of the piece. Similarly, a painting that lacks structure and tonal harmony, loses strength and capacity for expression. This course is shaped so that the student can understand natural laws of colour that will take their practice of painting to the next level.
It is highly recommended that Drawing Basics is the pre-requisite for this workshop. Students will learn how to put colours in tune with each other to make the painting ‘sound harmoniously’.
It is not unlike a science lab where experiments will explain the natural laws behind colour. This will utilize a number of the elements acquired in the drawing workshop.
This course is open to all levels.
Sculpture Basics
How to Make a Plaster Casting in a Waste Mold
A THREE DAY WORKSHOP
Date: October 2, 3 and 4th, 2020
Price: TBA
The term "waste mold" refers to traditional sculpture casting, where the mold is destroyed as it is chiseled off the cast.
In this workshop the students will create a piece in clay. They will then learn how to develop a waste mold the classical way (think Rodin) and finally replicate the original piece. This is the most inexpensive method of doing a casting of an original piece.
All levels welcome.
ONE ON ONE MENTORSHIPS

The facility includes a small fridge and hot plate for cooking. The cost is $150 plus GST per day which includes the overnight stay should that be desired. The artist is encouraged to bring something they are working on. Débora will have a conversation with the artist before coming to determine the best plan of action.
